Approximately 500 teams from over 20 states around the country competed this season in Regional Qualifier tournaments from October to December. Of UNT’s six teams (we were only allowed 6), every single team qualified for Day 2 of the competition and competed ranked in the Top 16 teams of their tournament (held in multiple locations around the country). Three of those teams advanced to qualify for the Preliminary Nationals-a set of four tournaments around the country which took place early in 2025. Qualifiers Kate Durham and Austin Boyd traveled to Memphis, Tennessee January 10-11, 2025, and competed at the Cecil C. Humphrey School of Law at the University of Memphis, again they advanced to the Sweet 16, but lost first round to a team that ultimately won. Impressively, both Kate and Austin are first-year Moot Court participants!
During the second set of Preliminary Nationals January 25-26, 2025, two teams traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico and competed at the University of New Mexico School of Law. Again, both teams advanced (Maitlynn Belvin and Abigail Casanova) made it to the Sweet 16 play-in round, and Ashlyn Dodson and Quinn Kelly took Second Place (advancing to the Final Round), putting them in the top 32 teams across the nation and one of 8 finalist teams across the country. Dodson and Kelly argued before New Mexico Supreme Court Justice, Micheal Vigil, and four other New Mexico Court of Appeals Judges including Megan P. Duffy, Shammara Henderson, and Gerald E. Baca, and former New Mexico Court of Appeals Judge Micheal Bustamante.
