Background & Teaching Interests
Dr. Matthew Baysden is a licensed psychologist and professional faculty member with over two decades of university-level teaching experience. His work centers on translating psychological science into practical, transferable skills that students can apply across professional and everyday contexts.

His teaching is grounded in the American Psychological Association’s Skillful Psychology Student framework, with an emphasis on developing analytical and critical thinking, ethical decision-making, communication, adaptability, and collaboration. He integrates clinical expertise with evidence-based pedagogy through active learning, case-based instruction, and applied problem-solving, preparing students to think and act effectively in complex, real-world situations.
Dr. Baysden’s scholarly interests are practice-informed and translational in nature. He is particularly interested in cross-cultural and multicultural psychology, with a focus on how cultural context shapes the experience and treatment of psychological distress. This work is complemented by broader interests in trauma, resilience, and the relational foundations of well-being, informed in part by his experience as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer.

In addition to his academic role, Dr. Baysden maintains an active clinical and consulting practice, with extensive experience conducting psychological evaluations, particularly with veteran populations. He has completed thousands of comprehensive mental health assessments, bringing applied relevance, diagnostic precision, and ethical complexity into both his clinical and teaching work.

Dr. Baysden’s professional identity is grounded in the belief that psychology is most valuable when it equips individuals to navigate uncertainty, make sound decisions, and engage meaningfully with others.
