Background & Research Interests
Dr. Rogers is a Regents Professor of Psychology. In 2014, he became only the third
professor to be designated as a UNT Eminent Faculty, one of the university’s highest
faculty honors.
Decades of his expertise has been devoted to the development and validation of forensic assessment instruments (FAIs) to standardized forensic evaluations especially in the criminal domain. In
addition to addressing insanity evaluations, Rogers is the principal author of the
Evaluation of Competency to Stand Trial—Revised (ECST-R), which is one of only two second-generation competency measures. More recently,
Rogers established the Standardized Assessment of Miranda Abilities (SAMA), the most comprehensive measure for evaluating the comprehension of a Miranda
warning and the ability to provide a knowing and legal Miranda waiver. His best-known
achievement involves the assessment of feigned mental disorders—similar to malingering—with
the Structured Interview of Reported Symptoms (SIRS) and its revised edition (SIRS-2).
Rogers is a prolific scholar with more than 230 peer-reviewed articles and eight books.
As a result, his Hirsch index (more commonly “h-index”) is exceptionally high at
87 with an i-10 index = 280.
National recognition of Rogers’s work included forensic psychology and psychiatry,
and more broadly, the academic discipline of psychology. In 1985, he became the first
recipient of the Distinguished Contributions to Forensic Psychology Award by the American
Academy of Forensic Psychology. He was also honored to receive two major awards in
forensic psychiatry: the Guttmacher Award (1990) and the Isaac Ray Award (2024). In
2011, Dr. Rogers became only the third psychologist in the history of the American
Psychological Association (APA) to receive Distinguished Professional Contributions
Awards in both Applied Research and Public Policy.
