French Honor Society

Pi Delta Phi

Pi Delta Phi, established in 1906, is the French National Honor Society and the University of North Texas chapter is Alpha Iota. There are currently more than 370 chapters of the Society in the United States and two representative chapters at the American Universities in Paris and
Aix-en-Provence in France.

  • Completion of at least one course of upper-division French (i.e. beyond the
    intermediate-level series of courses)
  • 3.0 GPA in French courses, 3.3 GPA overall, AND rank in the top 35% of their class
  • Must be at least at sophomore standing (i.e. second year of university study)

German National Honor Society

Delta Phi Alpha

Students enrolled in upper level German courses may be eligible to apply for membership in the Delta Phi Alpha, the German National Honor Society. Among other group activities, Delta Phi Alpha members have discovered German heritage traveling together from the Texas Hill Country to the fabled Black Forest of Germany.

  • Delta Phi Alpha is represented by the American Association of Teachers of German
  • Completion of two years of college level German courses (12 semester credit hours) or the equivalent.
  • A 3.3 GPA in German courses and an overall GPA of 2.7

Japanese Scholars Society

Students earning top grades in Japanese are eligible to apply for the Japanese Scholars Society. Certificates of Excellence and red-and-white cords to wear at graduation will be given to students who are granted membership into the society.

  • Completion of 5 semester courses of Japanese language
  • A GPA of 3.5 in Japanese language courses
  • An overall GPA of 3.0

National Hispanic Honor Society

Sigma Delta Pi

First established in 1919, Sigma Delta Pi is the National Hispanic Honor Society. Students earning top grades in Spanish are eligible to apply for Sigma Delta Pi. Red-and-gold cords and/or stoles are available to purchase to wear at graduation for students granted membership into the society.

  • Completion of three years of college level Spanish courses (18 semester credit hours) or the equivalent thereof. Must include at least 3 hours of of 3000/4000 level Spanish course with some component of Hispanic literature, culture, or civilization. 
  • A GPA of 3.0 in Spanish language courses
