We recognize that many students at the university speak languages other than those we teach. We cannot offer credit in those languages, but many academic programs will allow students to demonstrate proficiency in order to fulfill their language requirement. We cannot verify the requirements of other programs, so students will need to confirm with their major advisor to determine if this is an option for the student. Please see below for options on how a student can pursue a language proficiency.
If a student attended up until secondary school (high school) in a country that speaks the language, the student can send us a copy of their transcripts via email to worldlanguages@unt.edu and indicate that they would like to pursue obtaining a "proficiency through secondary study" waiver. These transcripts must show the student's full name, place of attendance, show years attended, grades, etc.) Once we recieve the appropriate materials, we can submit this information for review and request a "Proficiency Through Secondary Study" approval waiver form. Please note, if approved, this process can take ~8 weeks to complete before the proficiency is reflected onto a transcript.
If you wish to demonstrate your knowledge of a language with the proficiency testing option, you can request to take a test to determine your level of proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. With your advisor's consent, we can try to connect you with resources to be tested in the language you speak, so you may have your requirement waived. Please note, we can only offer this option if we have a volunteer test administrator for the particular languange. Please see below for more information regarding this option.
Please note the following:
In the past, we have had volunteer testers that included languages such as:
