
Why Study French?
French is spoken as an official or administrative language in more than 50 countries and French is spoken on five continents. France has one of the largest economies in the world and French companies employ approximately half a million Americans in the U.S. The U.S. is the largest direct investor of France, and France is one of the top three investors in the U.S. French, along with English, is the official working language of the United Nations, UNESCO, the International Monetary Fund, the International Labor Bureau, the International Olympic Committee, the Council of Europe, and the European Union. French is also one of the most frequently sought after languages for international jobs distributed by the US State Department.
Major in French
A major in French consists of a minimum of 120 semester hours, of which 42 must be advanced, and fulfillment of degree requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree as specified in the Academics section of the UNT catalog and the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences requirements.
Major Requirements, 39 hours total
Required Courses:
- FREN 1010 - Elementary French I
- FREN 1020 - Elementary French II
- FREN 2040 - Intermediate French I
- FREN 2050 - Intermediate French II
- Plus 27 additional hours of FREN 3000/4000 (9 hours in 4000-level courses)
Minor in French
A minor in French consists of a minimum of 21 semester hours in French, including 9 advanced hours. A minimum grade of C is required for a course to count toward the minor.
Transfer Credit and Placement Test
Placement for credit by examination may be used to satisfy FREN 1010-2050 or by transferring credits from another institution approved by UNT. For placement test information, please see the Placement Test section on our website for details.
