The Certificate (12 hours)

The Graduate Academic Certificate in User Experience Communication is a 12-credit-hour program consisting of four courses.

Students complete two required courses in UX writing and usability and user experience measurement, which provide a strong foundation in user-centered content development and experience evaluation.

In addition, students select one foundational technical communication course, such as style and technical writing, digital literacies, technical editing, or document design, to strengthen core professional communication skills.

The certificate is completed with a UX exploratory course, which may be an additional TECM course or a relevant course outside the department, allowing students to tailor the certificate to their academic background and career goals.

Students pursuing coursework outside the department must receive prior approval from the Technical Communication Graduate Director.

Am I eligible for the UX Communication certificate?

Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA on the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework prior to earning a bachelor’s degree, or a 2.8 GPA on all undergraduate work.

Applicants do not need to have an undergraduate degree in professional or technical writing in order to apply for the UX Communication Certificate. This certificate is open to any student with an undergraduate degree from an accredited university.

Applicants whose native language is not English must submit a TOEFL.

Am I required to take the GRE?

No. The UX Communication Certificate does not require the GRE.

Does the certificate qualify for F-1 visa sponsorship?

No. Fully online programs, such as the UX Communication Certificate, do not meet F-1 visa requirements.

How much does this program cost?

Costs vary depending on factors such as residency status and military benefits.

You can estimate your tuition using the university’s cost calculator.

Select “Fully online” and “Professional and Technical Communication MA.”

The costs for the certificate by hour are the same as the MA degree. Full-time students typically take 9 credit hours per semester, while part-time students take 3 or 6 credit hours.

What are the classes like?

Classes in the Graduate Academic Certificate in User Experience Communication emphasize applied, skills-based learning grounded in real-world UX practice.

Coursework focuses on tasks such as user research and testing, UX writing for digital interfaces, experience measurement, and translating user data into actionable communication decisions.

Depending on course selection, students may conduct usability tests, analyze user feedback, design content for user-centered systems, and develop research-informed UX deliverables suitable for professional portfolios.

All courses are taught by award-winning faculty with expertise in technical communication and user experience. Courses are delivered asynchronously.

Each week’s lesson is released at the start of the week, and students complete coursework on their own schedule, with assignments typically due one week after the lesson is posted.
