· Week One: Unlocking Shakespeare’s Text

Get ready to help your students break down Shakespeare’s language in five accessible steps. Using tools like poetic rhetoric, iambic pentameter, punctuation, and more, we’ll uncover the clues the Bard left behind—revealing the treasures hidden within his text.

· Week Two: Comedies, Tragedies, Histories, and Romances… Oh My!

Dive into Shakespeare’s genres through the lens of specific plays commonly taught in high school classrooms. We’ll explore what unites these stories, what sets them apart, and how genre shapes meaning, character, and theme.

· Week Three: Exploring Shakespeare’s Women

What makes Shakespeare’s female characters so compelling? This week, we’ll trace their evolution across his works, examining how shifts in monarchy and cultural norms influenced their portrayal. From “Dutiful Daughters” to “Willful Nieces,” join us for a lively look at “Wailing Women and Pants Roles.”

Study Abroad

Dance and Theatre have two different Study Abroad Programs. Find the right fit for you for Summer 2026!

Theatre in London

Theatre Study Abroad in London
Maymester 2026 with Professor Marjorie Hayes

This is the 4
th year we are offering this educational opportunity to explore the history and contemporary practice of theatre.  Besides visiting historical sites like Shakespeare’s birthplace and Hampton Court, we go backstage to see how productions are made in 4 historical theatres.   We see 10 plays: From mainstream theatres like the National and the Globe, but also the small provocative houses of new plays, and the multi-media and environmental staging of more experimental theatres.  Students have free time for other research agendas.  No previous theatre experience is required.  And the non-theatre majors make our discussions much more interesting!

Study Abroad: Barcelona Moves

Through this immersive experience, students will explore the vibrant artistic culture of Spain by engaging with the many art forms that shape the identity of Barcelona. The program invites students to dive into architecture, design, dance, and food—encountering firsthand how these creative expressions are woven into daily life in this dynamic Mediterranean city.
We would love the opportunity to visit your classes to briefly share this program with your students. As this is our first year offering the course, we are eager to spread the word and build excitement
