As part of the Celebration of 75 Years of Journalism at UNT, the Mayborn Board of Education Committee strengthened the Mayborn Mentors program with a clear mission: to make the Mayborn School of Journalism the premier journalism school in Texas. By maintaining strong ties with local and regional industry professionals and alumni, the program creates a direct pipeline from college to career, connecting current students with successful alumni and leading organizations across the field through interactive, career-focused events.
One of the greatest advantages of studying at Mayborn is direct access to highly experienced professionals spanning virtually every area of journalism and mass communication, most of whom are Mayborn alumni themselves. Through regular panels, mentor talks, and informal networking, students build the professional relationships that launch careers.
One of the great benefits of being a student at the Mayborn School is ready access to highly seasoned professionals working in virtually all areas of journalism and mass communication - most of whom are our very own alumni.
We schedule regular events featuring panels of mentors who share their lessons and experiences, and then meet informally with students to form valuable mentor networks.
To achieve this, the Mayborn Mentors program is guided by five core objectives:
Strategic Mentor Recruitment – To identify and recruit alumni and industry professionals through a selective process that prioritizes experience and a long-term commitment to student mentorship.
Program Infrastructure Development – To establish a strong organizational foundation for the program, including strategic pairing protocols and clear engagement guidelines that ensure every mentorship relationship is structured and purposeful.
Marketing and Positioning – To develop targeted outreach campaigns that position the Mayborn Mentors program as a core component of professional development within the Mayborn School of Journalism.
Sustained Engagement – To maintain consistent, active participation from both students and mentors through regular events, panels, and networking opportunities throughout the academic year.
Career Pathway Development – To create meaningful career pathways for Mayborn students by strengthening connections between the classroom and the broader professional journalism community.
