Graduate Assistantships

A limited number of graduate assistantships (i.e., TA for teaching, RA for research, GSA for graduate services) are awarded each school year by the Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism. No remote assistantships are available. In other words, all graduate assistants must be able to come to campus regularly. Although those positions are mainly for M.A. students, some positions may become available to qualified MSDCA students. All applicants must be fully admitted into their program with no undergraduate prerequisites left to take.

The minimum graduate cumulative GPA (CGPA) for assistantship applications is 3.5. New graduate students who earned their bachelor’s degree from UNT must have a minimum undergraduate CGPA of 3.5. On the other hand, new graduate students who do not have an undergraduate degree from UNT must demonstrate their academic excellence with a minimum CGPA of 3.5 in their first semester.

Each academic year, students who hold 20 hours a week salaried positions will have the opportunity to be awarded a new Tuition Benefit Program. This scholarship program will pay between three and nine credit hours of enrollment each long semester that students fulfill the obligations of their assistantship.

The graduate assistantship term of employment is semester to semester. A limited number of positions may be available in the summer. These are salaried positions that require an average of 20 hours a week with a faculty or staff member.
