Supporting student research and professional development is central to the mission of the Sociology Program and the broader School of Social Research & Practice. The grant opportunities outlined below include both School-administered funding and external opportunities for which the School provides support or coordination.

The School of Social Research & Practice will cover up to $50 toward the cost of printing a research poster for an academic poster session. School Student Travel Grant

The School of Social Research & Practice encourages its students to participate in major professional conferences and may provide funding to help cover eligible travel expenses. Terminal master’s students are eligible for funding for one conference trip while enrolled in the program, up to a maximum of $1,500. Pass-through and PhD-only students are eligible for funding for one conference trip per year while enrolled in the program, up to a maximum of $1,500.

Students requesting school travel funding must also apply for travel support from both the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) and the Toulouse Graduate School (TGS). The maximum amount a student may receive for a conference trip is $1,500, regardless of the source or combination of sources providing the funding.

Submission
Complete the Travel Funding Request (pdf), include documentation showing that you have requested travel funding from both CLASS and TGS, and submit all materials to Maggie Brown at Keith.Brown@unt.edu. Use “Student Travel Grant Application” as the email subject line.

AKD Travel Grant

Members of the Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society (AKD) can apply for AKD travel grants to attend the following regional conferences: AACS, ESS, MSS, MSSA, NCSA, PSA, SSS, and SSSA. Please note that funds are limited to $1800 per chaper per academic year; therefore, funding depends upon the number of approved applicants. Information regarding funding amounts and eligibility can be found on AKD's website. The school must submit one application, on behalf of all students who wish to travel, for the entire academic year (i.e., even if students don’t plan to go to a conference until the spring, they must submit their application materials to the program by AKD's fall travel funding deadline).

Submission
Send the following completed forms to Maggie Brown at Keith.Brown@unt.edu with the email subject line “AKD Travel Grant” no less than two weeks before AKD’s fall travel funding deadline, as noted on their website:

The school will coordinate the final submission of application materials to AKD. STUDENTS SHOULD NOT SUBMIT THE APPLICATION THEMSELVES.

AKD Undergraduate Student Paper Competition

Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society (AKD) sponsors an annual competition recognizing outstanding undergraduate sociological research. First-, second-, and third-place winners receive $500, $250, and $100, respectively, and each may receive up to $1,000 in travel support to attend the American Sociological Association (ASA) Annual Meeting. First-place winners may also submit their papers for possible publication in Sociological Inquiry, and all winners are invited to participate in the ASA Honors Program.

Submission
Students submit materials directly to Alpha Kappa Delta through the submission form on the AKD Undergraduate Student Paper Competition website by the applicable deadline. Please review all eligibility requirements, formatting instructions, and other procedures prior to submission.

ASA Student Forum Travel Award

The American Sociological Association (ASA) offers Student Forum Travel Awards to help undergraduate and graduate sociology students offset the cost of attending the ASA Annual Meeting. Applicants must be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate sociology degree and must be current ASA student members. Awards are competitive, and ASA considers factors including participation in the Annual Meeting program, the purpose and professional benefit of attending, financial need, the availability of other sources of support, and the potential benefit of attendance to the student.

Submission
Submit the required application materials to ASA by the applicable deadline. Students should review the current eligibility requirements and application instructions on the ASA Student Forum Travel Awards website before submitting their materials.
