General Requirements
Bachelor of Arts in Sociology (BA - not accepted new students)
NOTE: As of Fall 2025, no new students will be accepted to the Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Sociology program. Students currently enrolled in the BA program are allowed to complete their degree and graduate. The degree will be discontinued when all of its current students have graduated.

Degree requirements


The following requirements must be satisfied for a Bachelor of Science with a major in sociology.

Hours required and general/college requirements


A minimum of 120 semester hours, of which 42 must be advanced, and fulfillment of degree requirements for the Bachelor of Science degree as specified in the University Core Curriculum in the Degree and Program Requirements section of this catalog and the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences degree requirements (excluding foreign language).

Major requirements


36 hours in sociology, of which 24 must be advanced, including the sociology core curriculum (15 specified hours in sociology), of which 12 must be taken at UNT and at the advanced level (3000 or 4000). Note: Students must receive a C or better in sociology core curriculum courses.

Minor


Recommended but not required.

Other requirements


  • Minimum sociology grade point average of 2.25 is required for graduation.
  • A total of 42 hours upper-division work (advanced courses).
  • 30-hour residence requirement.

Most Sociology core courses are available in an online format. The department offers flexible options for students who are unable to attend classes in a traditional manner, including online, face-to-face, and hybrid classes.
 
Marketable skills for this degree include interpersonal, cognitive, and applied skill areas, that are valued by employers, and are primary or complementary to the major. The marketable skills goal was designed to help students articulate their skills to employers. UNT's marketable skills were faculty-developed and approved by employers or discipline-specific agencies, e.g., internship providers, chambers of commerce, workforce development boards, and other workforce-related entities. ACADEMIC ADVISING

Academic advisors and counselors are available in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) Dean's Office for Undergraduates and Student Advising in the General Academic Building (GAB), Room 220, to assist students in the development and pursuit of meaningful educational goals. The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Dean's Office for Undergraduates and Student Advising has trained academic advisors who are assigned to specific majors. The academic advisors prepare students' degree audits, assist majors with core curriculum issues and requirements for their chosen major, and process graduation applications. Students interested in making Sociology their major can contact the CLASS advisors or the Sociology Faculty Advisor, Dr. Helen Potts.

SOCIOLOGY INTERNSHIPS

Students can earn Sociology course credit by completing an internship! To receive credit, students must enroll in SOCI 4950 while working in a supervised position directly related to their major, professional field of study, or career objective. Students must have junior or senior standing and must have completed at least 12 credit hours of Sociology coursework. Students enrolled in SOCI 4950 may be eligible for Sociology's Unpaid Internship Scholarship.

Students are responsible for securing their own internship. Those interested in taking SOCI 4950 should contact Dr. Helen Potts.
