Your first year is about building a strong foundation. Use this checklist to stay on track, semester by semester. Put these reminders in your phone or planner, and bring questions to your Take Flight Counselor anytime.

Your goals this year

  • Get to know yourself and identify your strengths, interests, and career goals.
  • Take foundational courses for both core education and your major.
  • Figure out your learning style and the skills that support it.
  • Learn to manage your time for a healthy work-life balance.
  • Build a strong GPA.
  • Get involved in campus activities, clubs, and organizations.
  • Make friends.
  • Talk with a counselor about your emotional or mental health if you need to. See Counseling and Testing Services.

Month-by-month timeline

August and September
  • Use your syllabus to plan your semester.
  • Start meeting with your professors during office hours.
  • Get familiar with campus resources so you know where to turn when you need them. Start at succeed.unt.edu.
  • Find campus activities and organizations to join and meet people.
  • Attend your scheduled Advising 101.
  • Attend any departmental events for your major.
October
  • Apply for FAFSA for the next academic year.
  • Get advised by your Take Flight Counselor for Spring classes. Schedule in Navigate.
  • Check in with your professors to discuss midterms.
  • Use the Academic Success Center for tutoring and academic coaching as needed.
November
  • Register for the Spring semester.
  • Follow up with your Take Flight Counselor on your progress this semester.
December
  • Check your grades and adjust your schedule if needed.
January
  • Use your syllabus to plan your semester.
  • Start meeting with your professors during office hours.
  • Visit the Career Center to learn ways to prepare for the future.
  • Apply for scholarships.
February and March
  • Get advised by your Take Flight Counselor for Summer and Fall classes.
  • Connect with your faculty or department advisor and file your degree plan.
  • Check in with your professors to discuss midterms.
April
  • Register for the Summer and Fall semesters.
May
  • Check your grades and adjust your schedule if needed.
Summer
  • Rest.
  • Take courses if you need them.
  • Look for enrichment opportunities to prepare for the future.
