If you graduated high school in the last academic year, you are a member of Take Flight!
The Take Flight Academic Counselors look forward to getting to know you, advising you for classes in your first year, and helping you to be successful during your first year at UNT!
What We Do
- Academic Advising Appointments for all First Year CLASS Students
- Advising 101 Degree Planning Meetings (Fall only)
Learn how to read your degree audit and prepare for your first advising appointment at Advising 101.
- Understand how to use your degree audit to track your major and degree requirements.
- Find out what to expect during your Fall advising appointment and how to come prepared for a productive meeting with your Take Flight Counselor.
- Connect with other first-year students in your major as you begin your transition to college.
- Explore academic opportunities, organizations, and support resources available in your major.

- EDGE Group Academic Success Workshops (Spring only)
If you’re on academic alert or probation after your first fall semester, you'll be required to attend an EDGE Group—a supportive session designed to help you reflect on your experience, understand what may not have worked, and build a plan to move forward with confidence.
- Learn time management, study strategies, and motivation techniques tailored to your learning style.
- Explore campus resources that can support your academic and personal well-being.
- Connect with other students who are also working toward a stronger semester.
- Gain access to the EDGE Canvas course, where you’ll complete guided reflections and set intentional goals for the spring.

First Year Milestones
As you begin and progress through your first year at UNT, there are several key academic milestones to keep in mind to help you succeed and stay on track for graduation. Below will take you to a list of important milestones that will help you build a strong foundation in your first year and make a smooth transition into your second year. To stay organized, consider marking these dates on your calendar, printing the list, or saving it somewhere easy to access. We will also add you to a Canvas course designed specifically for first-year students, which will walk you through these milestones and keep you informed throughout the year.
