What We Do
Take Flight Counselors support you through every part of your first year. Here is what that looks like across the year.
Academic Advising Appointments
Every first-year CLASS student meets with a Take Flight Counselor for academic advising. We help you choose the right classes, understand your degree, and stay on track.
Advising 101: Degree Planning (Fall only)
Advising 101 is a group session that gets you ready for your first one-on-one advising appointment. In it, you will:
- Learn how to read your degree audit so you can track your major and degree requirements.
- Find out what to expect at your Fall advising appointment and how to come prepared.
- Meet other first-year students in your major as you start college.
- Explore the academic opportunities, organizations, and support resources in your major.
Watch your UNT email in August. You will get a link to Navigate to choose your Advising 101 session.
EDGE Group: Academic Success Workshops (Spring only)
If you are on academic alert or probation after your first Fall semester, you will attend an EDGE Group. This is a supportive session that helps you reflect on what happened, understand what did not work, and build a plan to move forward with confidence. In an EDGE Group, you will:
- Learn time management, study strategies, and motivation techniques that fit your learning style.
- Explore campus resources that support your academic and personal well-being.
- Connect with other students who are also working toward a stronger semester.
- Get access to the EDGE Canvas course, where you will complete guided reflections and set goals for Spring.
EDGE stands for Embrace the past, Don't give up, Grow from your experience, and Elevate your performance. You've got what it takes, and we're here to help you get there.
First Year Milestones
As you begin and progress through your first year at UNT, several key academic milestones will help you succeed and stay on track for graduation. The milestones page below walks you through what to do each month to build a strong foundation in your first year and make a smooth transition into your second year. To stay organized, mark these dates on your calendar, print the list, or save it somewhere easy to access. We will also add you to a Canvas course designed for first-year students that walks you through these milestones throughout the year. If you have any questions, your Take Flight Counselor is always here to help.
