CLASS Acts Performing Arts Series

Representatives of the CLASS Acts Performing Arts series--including two of our very own, Sarah Perry and Priscilla Ybarra--have been hard at work preparing to welcome the inimitable Joy Harjo to campus for a two-day event.

Joy Harjo

Two day event schedule:

Sunday, Feb 18 @ 6:30 PM - Craft Conversation - Union 333B (Jade Ballroom)

Tarfia Faizullah will host a conversation with Joy about her work and her views on writing. Highly recommended for students interested in the craft, but all are welcome.

Monday, Feb 19 @ 6:30 PM - Reading, Q&A, Book Signing - Union 226 (Lyceum)

Joy will read from her work and answer questions from the audience. Books for signing will be available for sale courtesy of UNT Barnes & Noble.

Joy Harjo's visit has been organized as part of the CLASS Acts Performing Arts series, which is made possible by funding from the UNT Institute for the Advancement of the Arts. CLASS Acts is organized by a Steering Committee with representatives from the Departments of English, Communication, Media Arts, and Theater in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.

Bio: In 2019, Joy Harjo was appointed the 23rd United States Poet Laureate, the first Native American to hold the position and only the second person to serve three terms in the role. Harjo's ten books of poetry include Weaving Sundown in a Scarlett Light, An American Sunrise, Conflict Resolution for Holy Beings, How We Became Human: New and Selected Poems, and She Had Some Horses. Her many writing awards include the 2022 Ivan Sandrof Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2019 Jackson Prize from Poets & Writers, the Ruth Lilly Prize from the Poetry Foundation, the 2015 Wallace Stevens Award from the Academy of American Poets, and the William Carlos Williams Award from the Poetry Society of America. She is a chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, Board of Directors Chair of the Native Arts & Cultures Foundation, and is artist-in-residence for the Bob Dylan Center.
