Dear alumni, students, and friends of UNTCOMM,

You may have seen information about UNT’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) restructuring its academic departments, and many of you have reached out to learn more. As of Fall 2026, CLASS will reorganize its units across eight new schools. While there remain many questions as to what this will all look like in practice, we want to share how this reorganization will impact our COMMunity.

Our Performance Studies faculty will join colleagues from Theater, Dance, and Creative Writing in a new School of Creative Writing & Performing Arts. The remaining Communication Studies faculty will move into the provisionally named School of Communication, Media & Writing, alongside colleagues from the Mayborn School of Journalism, Technical Communication, Media Arts, and the Writing & Rhetoric faculty from English.

We will continue to offer our BA and MA in Communication Studies. We look forward to exploring new curricular possibilities alongside our interdisciplinary colleagues, and we do not anticipate any impact on current students enrolled in either program.

We hope to carry forward the traditions that have made our COMMunity special for nearly a century at UNT — making art in the Black Box, hosting the COMM Alumni Mentoring Program and COMM Day, supporting our nationally renowned Debate team, and finding new ways to stay connected with our amazing alumni. As we look toward the future, we will be in touch as opportunities for you to get/stay engaged arise. We look forward to what we'll build together in this next chapter.

Your voices are more important than ever. Please don't hesitate to reach out as we navigate this transition together.

More to come soon.
