The Department of Communication Studies hosted its fourth annual COMM Day event on Thursday, April 23. COMM Day serves as a celebration of all things COMM, with panels, presentations, performances, and debates hosted from morning until dusk.
Students in Introduction to Communication hosted the Advocacy in Action donation fair, with projects promoting local charities and organizations while providing opportunities to donate. A civic deliberation forum was held by students of Civic Collaboration discussing ongoing cultural and legal changes in the Texas higher education landscape. Both Communication Perspectives and Theories of Crisis Communication hosted poster sessions exhibiting class research projects. Additional presentations were made by students in Landscapes of Public Memory, Small Group Communication, Social Science Research Methods, Digital Storytelling, and Sport Communication.
COMM Day also featured Debate-A-Palooza, a series of simultaneous debate rounds conducted by the students of COMM 2140: Advocating in Public. This year, students debated the resolution: The State of Texas should legalize recreational use of marijauana for adults ages 21 and older. To cap off the night, UNT Debate members Freddie Smith and Jack Hasper negated the proposition in a showcase debate against Comet Speech debaters Tyler Crivella and Charles Yelderman from UT Dallas.
Finally, the spring 2026 Devising Ensemble hosted an open dress rehearsal of Cooked: Chronicles of a Kitchen, an exploration of cooking and performance, in the Communication Studies Black Box.
Thank you to everyone who attended COMM Day 2026! Our COMM-unity showed up and showed out. We can't wait to see you next year for COMM Day 2027!
