The University of North Texas Counselor and Advisor Network (UCAN) recognized the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Advising advisors for its top awards. The four honorees swept each of the Outstanding Advising Administrator categories, namely Advising Administrator, New Advisor, Faculty Advisor, and Primary Advisory.
The honor recognizes individuals who have demonstrated qualities associated with outstanding academic advising of students or outstanding academic advising administration.
Laurie Carroll earned the Primary Advisory honor, Melissa Nelson earned the Faculty Advisor merit, while Abigail Reeves was bestowed the New Advisor title, rounding out the quartet is Jennifer Palcich who received the Advising Administrator nod.
"The award winners are exemplary of the amazing advising teams in CLASS that focus on helping students achieve their educational, personal, and career goals", said Jean Schaake, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
Carroll advises all Integrative Studies and Social Science majors, Nelson serves as lecturer and faculty advisor for the department of anthropology, Reeves advises all majors in the Social Sciences, and Palcich is the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and oversees the CLASS Ambassadors.
"CLASS advisors build a relationship with students rather than dispensing prescriptive advice", said Schaake. CLASS advisors are structured in teams of Social Science, Humanities, Communication, Performance and Media Arts, Integrative Studies, Social Science, and FTIC which are led by four assistant deans. "These advisors have a passion for providing differentiated advising for each of the years in the student life cycle. Not only are the teams supportive of each other, but they also participate in professional development both locally and nationally to hone their skills," praised Schaake.
