Grad Programs Leading the Nation

The Department of Philosophy and Religion is home to one of the leading graduate programs in environmental ethics and social and environmental philosophy, with a national and international reputation in the field.

The department offers two graduate degrees: the Master of Arts in Philosophy and the Doctor of Philosophy in Philosophy. Both programs provide rigorous foundational training in the history of philosophy, Western and Asian religion, and coursework engaging pressing real-world issues—including the environment, climate, energy, food, water, and technology.

Students who specialize in social and environmental ethics and philosophy are particularly well positioned for academic careers, as demand for specialists in this growing subfield continues to increase. The department's concentration of leading scholars in the field also makes it an attractive destination for postdoctoral researchers and professionals seeking opportunities for independent study and advanced professional development.

Graduate courses in philosophy may also be taken as part of the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies through the Center for Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies at the Toulouse Graduate School. That program allows students, working closely with a faculty advisor, to design individualized degree plans drawing on three or more related fields—and can be completed in as little as one year including summer. Philosophy courses are additionally available as a minor on master's degrees in other disciplines and as a minor or supporting field on doctoral programs across the university.
