Scholarship applications for the 2026-2027 Academic Year are closed. The 2027-2028 applications will be available in November, 2026.

To be considered for Economics Department Scholarships

By completing and submitting this application, you will be considered for any UNT Department of Economics undergraduate scholarships for which you meet the criteria. To be eligible for any of the undergraduate scholarships, you must be an undergraduate economics major (B.A. Economics, B.S. Economics, or B.B.A. Economics) currently enrolled as a student at UNT in Denton or Frisco and you must not be graduating from UNT until December of 2026 or later.

Economics Department Scholarships

The Department of Economics is proud to offer a variety of scholarships that recognize academic excellence, honor the legacy of our faculty and students, and support the next generation of economists. These scholarships are made possible through the generosity of alumni, faculty, and other supporters. The number of scholarships awarded each year depends on available funding. The Economics Department Scholarship Committee, which includes both graduate and undergraduate advisors, carefully reviews all applications. Scholarship amounts vary annually based on funding, with most awards ranging from $500 to $1,000.  Explore our scholarship opportunities below.

Lewis M. Abernathy Scholarship in Economics

Named for Professor Lewis Abernathy, who was a member of the Department from 1967 to 1999 and chaired the department for a decade. This merit-based scholarship supports full-time undergraduate or graduate Economics majors with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Dr. Abernathy was a passionate advocate for labor education and a leader in the field.

Melton-Cochran Scholarship

Established in memory of Rosser B. "Abe" Melton (a faculty member from 1946-1975) and Kendall P. Cochran (on the faculty from 1957-1989, and department chair from 1969-1977). Melton and Cochran were both strong mentors and an inspiration to students. This scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate economics major of junior standing who has completed at least 60 hours of coursework and maintains a minimum 3.5 overall grade point average.

Susan Dadres Memorial Scholarship

Established in memory of former faculty member Susan Dadres ('84, '86 MS), who passed away on May 19, 2022. Susan Dadres dedicated her professional life to education. At a time when single mothers were often unable to pursue college, she earned her master's degree from UNT and her doctorate from Southern Methodist University. She went on to teach economics as a lecturer at UNT and other universities for more than 30 years, as well as co-writing widely used economics textbooks and workbooks. She was an early pioneer of online education and developed UNT's first online economics courses, increasing educational opportunities for countless students. Throughout her life, she inspired her students and her colleagues with her commitment to teaching.

Economics Alumni Advisory Council Scholarship

Established by the Alumni Advisory Council (click here for information on the AAC). The purpose of the fund is to provide support to further the mission of the Department of Economics (or its successor), including but not limited to support for departmental research and excellence activities and Economics Alumni Advisory Council (or its successor) operations.

Dr. Margie Tieslau Scholarship

This scholarship is made possible by the contributions of Deborah Watkins (MS'97) in honor of Dr. Margie Tieslau's contribution to the department and education of our graduate students. The scholarship is merit based and is awarded to an undergraduate economics major with an outstanding academic record. Students must have a minimum 3.0 average and maintain full time enrollment status unless they are graduating.

Department of Economics Undergraduate Scholarship for Academic Excellence

This scholarship is awarded to outstanding undergraduate economics majors. Any student who is an Economics major and has at least a 3.0 GPA on all college work is eligible. Entering freshman who have a minimum SAT score of 1000 or an ACT score of at least 24 also are eligible to apply. The number and amount of awards depend upon the availability of funding.

Full Time Enrollment Status:
Undergraduate students must have at least a 12-hour academic load to achieve full time enrollment status. Graduate students must be enrolled in 9 hours of graduate coursework (5000-level or higher) to be considered full time.
