The Department of History offers several departmental Undergraduate scholarships as
listed below. Applications will be posted each September 1st on this website under
the Forms tab. Applications are due by March 1st of each year for the following academic
year. The scholarship application will open on September 1st and remain open until
March 1st at 5:00 pm of each year.
Some scholarships may require supplemental application materials (in addition to the
materials required by the department for all scholarships). The criteria for each
scholarship, as well as the additional supplemental materials required (if applicable)
are listed below.
When applying for scholarships, please carefully read the criteria for each scholarship
and closely follow the directions on the application regarding submission of department
required materials, as well as scholarship specific supplemental materials.
A fund to support scholarships for undergraduate students of History.
To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Enroll as an undergraduate student majoring in History and have a minimum 3.5 cumulative
grade point average;
- Maintain full time enrollment at the University, unless they have fewer than twice
the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program.
A fund established in memory of Glynda Black, a 1965 University of North Texas graduate,
to support students in need the financial means to pursue an education.
To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the University
in effect at the time of any award;
- Maintain full-time enrollment as established by the University, unless the student
is nearing completion of their degree program and does not need full-time enrollment;
- Enroll as a student majoring in history or pursuing their teaching certification at
the University; and
- Preference will be given to those who demonstrate eligibility for need-based financial
assistance as determined by completion of the Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA), which includes an application process that contains written release from
the student to share FAFSA information between University departments and donors coordinating
related award processes.
A fund to provide scholarships to history majors.
To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Enroll as an undergraduate student majoring in History and have a minimum 3.5 cumulative
grade point average; or enroll as a candidate for an M.A. or Ph.D. in History in good
standing and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.8;
- Maintain full time enrollment at the University, unless they have fewer than twice
the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program.
A fund to support undergraduate and graduate history students.
To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of their degree
program in the Department of History in effect at the time of any award;
- Enroll as an undergraduate student majoring in History or as a graduate student pursuing
an M.A. or Ph.D. in History;
- Maintain full time enrollment at the University, unless they have fewer than twice
the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program.
A fund to provide scholarships to undergraduate and graduate History majors.
To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of their degree
program in the Department of History in effect at the time of any award;
- Enroll as an undergraduate student majoring in History or as a graduate student pursuing
an M.S., M.A., or Ph.D. in History;
- Maintain part-time or full time enrollment at the University.
A fund to provide need-based scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students
working toward a degree in history.
To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the University
(or its successor) in effect at the time of any award;
- Maintain full-time enrollment as established by the University, unless the student
is nearing completion of their degree program and does not need full-time enrollment;
- Enroll as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student majoring in history at the
University; and
- Demonstrate eligibility for need-based financial assistance as determined by completion
of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) (or its successor), which
includes an application process that contains written release from the student to
share FAFSA information between University departments and donors coordinating related
award processes.
A fund in honor of Gil Samples and to provide support for history students at the
University.
To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of their degree
of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences in effect at the time of any award;
- Maintain full-time enrollment as established by the University, unless the student
is nearing completion of their degree program and does not need full-time enrollment;
- Enroll as a full-time student majoring in history at the University; and
- In the event no applicant meets these criteria, then students enrolling full-time
in any degree-granting program within the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences
will be eligible for consideration.
An endowment to support scholarships for students majoring in History.
To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the College
of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences in effect at the time of any award;
- Maintain full-time enrollment as established by the University, unless the student
is nearing completion of their degree program and does not need full-time enrollment;
and
- Enroll as a full-time student majoring in History at the University.
- In the event no applicant meets these criteria, then students enrolling full-time
in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences will be eligible for consideration.
A fund in honor of Gus Seligmann and to provide scholarships for students majoring
in History at the University with preference given to pre-law students.
To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the College
of Arts and Sciences Department of history in effect at the time of any award;
- Maintain full time enrollment at the University, unless they have fewer than twice
the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program;
- Enroll as a full-time student majoring in History at the University, with preference
given to pre-law students.
A fund to provide scholarships for undergraduate majors in the Department of History
at the University.
To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department
of History in effect at the time of the award;
- Maintain full time enrollment at the University, unless they have fewer than twice
the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program;
- Enroll as a full-time student in the Department of History at the University.
A fund in honor of Professor J.L. Kingsbury of the History faculty, and to provide
scholarships for freshman and sophomore students majoring in history, and who intend
to teach history in the Texas public school system.
To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the College
of Arts and Sciences and the Department of History (or its successor) in effect at
the time of any award; and,
- Must maintain full time enrollment at the University; and,
- Enroll as a full-time freshman or sophomore student majoring or planning to major
in history at the University, and who intends to teach history in the Texas public
school system after graduation; and,
- Submit a two-page essay focusing upon your career goals as a teacher of history in
the Texas public school system.
An endowment created in memory of Shay Ledbetter and to provide scholarships for full-time
students majoring in history at the University.
To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department
of History in effect at the time of any award;
- Maintain full time enrollment at the University, unless they have fewer than twice
the number of semester hours required to be a full time remaining in their degree
program;
- Enroll as a full-time student in history at the University; in the event no applicant
possesses this characteristic, then students enrolling full-time in Biology at the
University will be eligible for consideration.
A fund established to support scholarships for History students at the University.
To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the College
of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences in effect at the time of any award;
- Maintain full-time enrollment as established by the University, unless the student
is nearing completion of his or her degree program and does not need full-time enrollment;
- Be enrolled as a full-time Junior- or higher-level student majoring in History, with
a concentration in American History, at the University;
- Have a 3.2 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale, overall and departmental;
- Provide a statement describing your life goals, including some amplification of each
goal; and
- Provide a letter of recommendation from a UNT history professor.
Applications for financial aid administered by the university Financial Aid Office
should be made by June 1 (for the Fall semester), October 1 (for the Spring semester), and April 1 (for the Summer terms).
In the event of not receiving a scholarship, a student may appeal the decision by
emailing HistoryScholarships@unt.edu no later than April 15 to begin the appeals process.
