In-CLASS Distinguished Faculty Series – Embodied Heritage

The University of North Texas College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) will host its semesterly series, In-CLASS Distinguished Faculty Series: Embodied Heritage discussion on Tuesday, March 7, 2023.

Outgoing co-chairs, Dr. Anna Hinton, Assistant Professor with the Department of English, and Dr. Steve Wolverton, Professor and Chair with the Department of Geography and the Environment passed the baton to Dr. Jacqueline Demeritt, Associate Professor and graduate Advisor, Department of Political Science and Dr. Miguel Gualdrón Ramírez, Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy & Religion. Demeritt and Gualdron Ramirez will lead the series as co-chairs, and will reign as the leaders over the next four semesters.

For the spring 2023 series, Whitney Geldon and Reyna Mondragon, Lecturers, Department of Dance and Theatre, Karine Narahara, Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology, Sasha Senders, Assistant Professor, Department of Communication Studies, and Priscilla Solis Ybarra, Associate Professor, Department of English have been tabbed to serve as panelists.

"We are excited to continue this conversation from last semester", said Dr. Gualdrón Ramírez. "The goal of this panel is to broaden the discussion and include an interdisciplinary approach to questions of embodiment and heritage that are so important for our students at UNT. We want to learn how to involve our extended families and communities in the work we do at the university."

Last fall, Mondragon led the discussion where she featured her work that focuses on the multiple ways to incorporate cultural heritage and rhythm, kinesthetically, visually, and musically into dance.

"Attendees will learn more about embodied heritage including how it has shaped the work of our panelists", said Dr. Demeritt. "We also hope attendees leave thinking more deeply about how embodied heritage enters and affects their own lives, and how that might in turn affect their research, teaching, and broader membership in our community."

The hybrid anticipated 90-minute program, "Embodied Heritage" will start at 2 p.m. inside UNT Union Room 314 A&B. The event is free and open to the public. Attendees interested in the hybrid option, can access the live event via Zoom: 86517364340.

About In-CLASS Distinguished Faculty Series: The In-CLASS Distinguished Faculty Series was formed for the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) with the series spotlighting different academic connections on comfortable discussions with the University of North Texas faculty. Each academic semester, CLASS engages an audience with a speaker or panel aimed at drawing attention to one or more of the disciplines within the liberal arts and social sciences, to appeal to the general public, faculty, and students by illustrating high intellectual achievement. The programs are of general humanistic appeal with interdisciplinary topics. The speaker or panel can share their research, teaching, experiences, and findings on the topic, and engage with questions.
