Mayborn’s Randy Loftis Received 50th ‘Fessor Graham Award

Denton, TX-The University of North Texas lecturer Randy Loftis with The Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism has been awarded the 'Fessor Graham Award bestowed by UNT Student Government Association (SGA).

Loftis is an award-winning journalist who worked for more than 30 years as an environmental and investigative reporter for The Dallas Morning News and The Miami Herald. He has worked as an adjunct professor at UNT for about a decade and taught a variety of classes ranging from Introduction to Media Writing to Science & Environmental Reporting. He has done freelance work for the online journal Texas Climate News, The New York Times, and National Geographic.

Randy earned his master's degree in journalism from UNT, and his thesis was titled "Environmental journalism curriculum as an imperative of democracy: A philosophical exploration." Randy is active in the Society of Environmental Journalists and the Investigative Reporters & Editors.

He has earned dozens of awards ranging from the Worth Bingham Prize for investigative reporting from Harvard University to a public service award from the Texas APME. His work also has earned him fellowships in Denmark, Norway, Germany, and Spain.

This academic year marks the 50th year of the award, while Loftis (20 is the third journalism faculty to receive the honor, he joins fellow recipients Richard Wells (1987-88) and Douglass Starr (1980-81). Meanwhile, a CLASS faculty member has received the honor twenty-two times.

About "Fessor Award

This award is named for the late Professor Floyd Graham and is presented by the Student Government Association to a faculty member for outstanding service to students. This award is the highest honor given by the student body.
